My First Pre-hab Workout
I’ve been very nervous over the last few days about my pre-hab workouts being cancelled due to the Covid-19 sequestering. Each call I received from Duke over the last few days I was expecting to hear ”cancelled until further notice.” For someone that’s been told I have 3 to 6 months to live, the potential of an undetermined delay is anxiety causing to the max. Luckily every call has been confirming the appointment for today or setting more appointments to come.
As I approached the Rehab Center this afternoon, there was a big sign outside informing all patients that the rehab workouts were cancelled beginning tomorrow. Crestfallen, I entered the facility for what I felt would be my only workout I learned they have cancelled workouts for every group except the transplant group! None of us can spare the time!
My workout went very well. I can do all that is required and then some. The only hurdle I need to reach is to drop 15lbs over the next 6-8 weeks. Having given up all alcohol, eating smaller portions, and ramping up the exercise, I’m confident I can do it. However, did I say it sucks! With everything going on in the world and my life, a fine bottle of wine would sure hit the spot, but alas those days are over for me. I had a good run.
The 23 workouts i have to look forward to consist a lot of aerobic exercise. Walking an oval track, miles upon miles on treadmills and exercise bikes, all the while sucking down 15 liters of oxygen to keep my saturation levels where they need to be. Five days a week this is where I’ll be. Getting stronger, leaner and ready for the transplant.
